When Tim Delcid founded Golden Empire Fleet Service, Inc., in 1983, he had high hopes for the future of the company.

“The whole reason I chose that name was because I was thinking of the future and the growth I hoped we’d see,” Delcid said. “I wanted us to service the entire valley—the Golden Empire—and beyond.”

He accomplished this goal not through wishing and hoping, but through hard work and perseverance.

Delcid had been laid off from his job with Getty Oil (in the transportation department). “In 1983, good jobs were hard to get. But I had a family and I needed to pay my bills, so I borrowed my dad’s 1972 Chevy pick-up, put my tools in the back, and went knocking on doors.”
The early days weren’t all wine and roses, Delcid added with a chuckle. “My wife, Linda, had experience baking cakes, so she would make all kinds of cakes at home—birthday, anniversary, wedding—to help pay the bills.”

And slowly but surely he grew the company into what it is today, providing quality truck repair and maintenance services for industries like transportation, fuels, construction, and even the school districts in a number of ways including roadside assistance, scheduled maintenance, BIT inspections, and on-site repairs.

Which makes Delcid even more proud of the company today, and that includes its partnership with NAPA. “NAPA Truck & Trailer Parts is a heavy duty store,” he said. “And it is also focused on trucking, agriculture, construction, oil companies, and other industries.”

Just because Delcid was looking toward the future when he started his business didn’t mean he wasn’t proud of his past. “My grandparents, Batista and Mary Prati, had a truck stop and café on Union Avenue back in the ‘20s and ‘30s called Mary’s Place, just around the corner from where we’re located today.” It’s one of the reasons the family loves to give back to our community, partnering and sponsoring nonprofit organizations and events including Bakersfield Breakfast Lions, Bakersfield Judo Club, the California Trucking Association, and others.

Together with his two sons, Timothy and Josh, Delcid has expanded to provide more services and products. “We have amazing employees who have been with us for decades, some for twenty years and some for thirty! Today, Timothy and Josh are on their way to grow the company even more.”
That doesn’t mean Delcid is ready to turn over the reigns completely; he’s still very hands-on, especially when it comes to promoting the company’s philosophy.

“We work hard at being there for our customers. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, we’ll be there. And that is why we have customers continue to come back to us. I still have customers that were coming to me on day one.”

With the Delcids’ perseverance, a hardworking team of dedicated employees, and a strong philosophy of customer service, they’ll be gaining even more lifetime clients for years to come.
